Ilya Olegovich Komov was born in 1965 in Moscow. Komov’s grandfather Ilya Timofeevich Kompov lived in the Stoleshnikov lane and was on friendly terms with Vladimir Gilyarovskiy, a famous Russian writer, author of the "Moscow and Muscovites" book. Before the revolution the grandfather used to be a warden
in the Cosmas and Damian church. The painter’s relatives from the other family branch were on good terms with Fyodor I. Shalyapin. The other grandfather,
Alexei Matveevich Gromov, was an artist, writer, and playwright. In 1937 he was executed as a public enemy. Among the exhibits in the Lermontov museum in
Tarhany there is a family album of the Komovs. There you may find a graphic portrait of Ilya Komov’s great-grandmother drawn by the famous Russian poet
Lermontov M. U.
In 1972-1978 Ilya Komov attended an Arbat secondary specialized school N. 12 named after a famous Russian artist Polenov where he studied French. In 1983 he graduated from the Moscow Secondary Artistic school located in the Lavrushinskiy lane right across the Tretyakov Gallery which played an important role in his education. During the school years he was a member of a group of with producers, poets, actors like Alexander Basov, Julia Rutberg, Michael Bolduman etc. In 1989 Ilya Komov graduated from the State Arts Institute named after Surikov where a famous artist Salahov T.T. influenced his making. Trips to Pereslavl Zalesskiy, contacts with famous artists of unofficial art, study and friendship with restorers, examination and copying of Guriy Nikitin frescos in the Trinity cathedral of the Danilov monastery played a significant role in the career of Ilya Komov. His teacher was none other than the renowned restorer Golushkin. The artist has been using the Danilov’s techniques in painting till these days. In his art Ilya Komov uses the experience of the old Russian mural painters, Russian and French Arts of the 20th century. (Matisse, Bonnard, van Dongen, Dufy, Serge Polyakoff, Nicolas de Stael). This combination as well as the ability to feel the space and artistic freedom help the artist to reach emotional capacity in his works of art. Since 1987 Ilya Komov has been participating in exhibitions. He was a member of the informal arts union "Kovcheg" (an anti-commercial protest organization in the Arbat street, exhibitions in the Central House of Doctor and in the editorial office of the "Yunost" magazine). At present Komov has held 20 personal exhibitions in Russia and abroad. In 1991 Komov was admitted to the membership of the Artists Union. In 2007 he was awarded with a Silver medal of the Russian Academy of Arts and he rewarded with the diploma of honours of the Russian Academy of Arts. Komov won the "Golden brush" competition and he was also awarded with the Moscow Artists Union prize. In 2000 the "Faces" magazine elected Ilya Komov as one of the key persons of the coming century. Ilya Komov is the author of the "Russian portrait" project. Komov is one of the few artists who looks not only at a person’s appearance but also into his subtle inner world. This Russian technique is based on the ancient (frescoes) and modern (abstraction) Russian art where the essence of the object is revealed by the colour. Within the framework of the this project there took place personal exhibitions in the Central Artist House organized by the World Health Organization, in the Russian Academy of Arts and in the residence of the Ambassador of Finland. Together with the Bolshoi Theather orchestra soloist, Professor Leonid Kondakov, Ilya Komov is the author of the "Russian Salons" project. Color and music are similar ways of expression and influencing the person’s soul. The performance of the leading musicians surrounded by their own portraits which were painted during this particular music performance creates a live portrait. "Russian Salons" were held in the studio of Ilya Komov where there is the acoustics is superb, as well as in other places. In 2007 one more music exhibition was held in the residence of the Ambassador of Luxemburg. In 2005 Ilya Komov travelled to India and created a cycle "Russian portrait of India". He was nominated for the award of the Russian Academy of Arts Silver medal. The chairman of the leading party - Indian National Congress - Sonya Gandhi granted Komov an audience and appreciated his works. On the occasion of the opening of the final personal exhibition in the "Indian International Center" in New-Delhi Mrs. Gandi wrote in her letter "Thank you for your love to my people. It is all expressed in your works". In Moscow the exhibition "Russian portrait of India" was held in 2006 in the State Museum of the Orient and in the Indian Embassy. In May 2007 Komov’s personal exhibition "Going over three seas" took place in the "Vincent" gallery where there were also exhibited works of the Indian cycle. Ilya Komov was elected a member of Guardian Committee of the first Orthodox church in India dedicated to Apostle Thomas that is being constructed in New-Delhi.
